Halloween has been an event at Sonar since we started ten years ago. As a Canadian, there’s always been something special for me about Halloween. It’s that one day of the year when everyone gets to drop their guard a little, to dress up, laugh at themselves, and lean into the weird and wonderful.
For that reason, I think it is a great day to really be embraced by companies and provides good energy for company culture.
A Creativity Reset
At Sonar, we talk a lot about creativity in how we solve problems, how we show up for clients, and how we think about what’s next. Halloween is a natural creativity reset. It invites everyone to think differently, to step outside their usual role or comfort zone, and to have a bit of fun with it. Whether you’re a web developer or a paid media consultant, there’s something freeing about showing up as someone (or something) else for a day.
Laughter Builds Teams
The best teams have trust, and trust often starts with shared laughter. When you’ve seen your boss in full zombie makeup or your colleague dressed as a jellyfish, it’s hard to take yourself too seriously, and that’s a good thing. Halloween strips away hierarchy and invites people to connect as humans first.
A Little Competition Never Hurts
A friendly competition can be great for culture. It gives people a reason to collaborate, rally behind a theme, and celebrate each other’s efforts. It’s a low stakes, high energy way to strengthen bonds and build pride in the little moments.
Culture Is Built in the Small Things
Culture isn’t just built in strategy sessions or all hands meetings. It’s built in these small moments that remind us why we like working together. Halloween is one of those moments, a reminder that work can be serious without always being serious.
So here’s to Halloween, to creativity, connection, and a little bit of chaos. Because when people feel like they can show up as themselves (or a vampire version of themselves), great things happen.
